Bringing Back Field Trips: Engaging Learners Through Authentic Viewing Encounters
10:00 am - 10:50 am
Csilla Stewart and Lisa Hughes
Although field trips expose students to authentic learning experiences that foster retention, teachers are often unable to organize and conduct real field trips due to time, administrative, and budget constraints as well as school corporation restrictions. With the help of technology and some creativity, educators may opt for an alternative solution: simulations and virtual field trips (VFT).
When VFTs are compared to the conventional, non-interactive learning methods, VFTs increase student understanding and motivation, modify the perception that classes are boring, assist with teaching abstract science concepts, create active learning, and increase knowledge retention.
This session will include how to get started implementing VFTs, what technologies are needed, what VFTs are readily available, and lastly, how make VFTs more interactive prior, during, and after the experience. In addition, handouts, such as a compiled list of resources, examples, and an assignment template, will be shared.

We will provide examples of inspiring and innovative educators to follow so you start incorporating fresh and creative ideas into your classroom. We will also teach you how to use social media to connect with your students and meet them on their playing field. Social media can be a powerful tool to help you develop positive relationships with students and encourage them to engage in lessons in fun and new ways.

STEM is big in education these days. But what really makes for a quality STEM activity? Why are they so important? You'll learn these foundations, experience a mini STEM activity, and leave with resources and tips for getting started.

Reinventing the WebQuest
10:00 am - 10:50 am Casey Dust My topic of presentation is over reinventing the Webquest in elementary and middle school classrooms. This can be done in high school and beyond, but I will be focusing on the younger grades. This can be used as an interdisciplinary approach, or simply focused on one subject. Old Webquests were mostly searching for information and plugging it in to an old and overused format…BUT, it doesn’t have to be that way! Virtual tours, hands-on activities that can be plugged into the Quest, Geocaching to add to your maps, creating videos, role-playing, and more can be added to this new and engaging way to teach your students how to be Internet sleuths and to use Google for more than finding YouTube videos about cats. |

Add to Your Instructional Technology Sandbox: Tools to Support the Refreshed ISTE Educator Standards
11:00 am - 11:50 am Dr. Li-Wei Peng The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) released an updated version of the ISTE Standards for Educators in June 2017 to maximize learning for all students using technology. With the theme “Learning First, Technology Second,” the presenter will highlight the specific digital tools and resources for educators to implement these standards: Learner, Leader, Citizen, Collaborator, Designer, Facilitator, and Analyst. This session promotes the development and collaboration of P-12 teachers who support the professional growth of students as they use technology to enhance learning. Educators can gain a hands-on experience with technology, as well as the authentic technology-enriched best practices that can be applied seamlessly in their classrooms. |
G Suite for Education
11:00 am - 11:50 am Rachel Porter Move over Microsoft Word, there's a new kid in town. Knowledge of Google's collection of tools for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, forms and class management is a must-have for current and future teachers. The collaboration, efficiency, and access are unparalleled, and Google offers it all to schools for FREE. Come get an overview tour and peak at the more advanced features, as well as information on how to learn more and start making the switch. 50 Tech Tools in 50 Minutes
11:00 am - 11:50 am Tiffany Todd Transforming Passive Video Viewing into an Engaging Learning Experience
1:00 pm - 1:50 pm Dr. Jim Brinson Given the time spent creating and/or curating instructional videos for your classroom, wouldn’t you like to know if your students are watching them? And if they are, wouldn’t you like to know if they are grasping the content being taught without consuming precious class time giving them a formal quiz or test? Both research and practice show that actively engaging students while they are viewing a video yields greater learning gains. This session will show you how to transform your streaming videos (i.e. from YouTube, TeacherTube, Vimeo, etc.) into active learning experiences by using PlayPosit, an open source tool for designing and sharing interactive video lessons. Not only is it free, it’s really easy! Any streaming video can be effortlessly cropped and edited based on specific learning objectives of the lesson. Eight different assessment question types, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, survey/poll, and others, can be created and embedded anywhere within the video. Throughout the video lesson, students can rewind to hear any part of the video again. They cannot, however, fast-forward and skip ahead. Through a dashboard, teachers can get data about students' use and performance within the embedded assessment items. Students receive immediate feedback on their learning, and can also evaluate the interactive recordings and provide feedback. Breakout EDU
1:00 pm - 1:50 pm Rachel Porter Tech-Enhanced Games for Higher Order Thinking The escape room comes to the classroom! Experience this fun higher-order activity that builds communication, problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills. This session will include participation in a BreakoutEDU game as well as resources and information for how to start using it with students.
